Covivial Life at Moomin’s Table: Eating and Sharing Nature’s Bounty

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo
Finished
"Convivial" means "banquet," "feast," and "coexistence." It also conveys an atmosphere of cheerfulness, friendliness, and comfort.

In the world of the Finnish-born "Moomin," various foods appear throughout the seasons, and scenes surrounding them overflow with conviviality. Through food, friendships deepen, thoughts are conveyed, and living is intertwined with eating. There are many scenes where one can feel the connection between sharing one's imagination, caring for others, and acting on one's passions and desires. In today's society where diverse values clash, the way of life of the inhabitants of Moomin Valley, who firmly maintain their individuality while somehow coexisting, and the concept of "conviviality," may offer important insights for living in the future.

In this exhibition, various works themed around "food" will be displayed. A portion of the miniature tool collection "Paraphernalia," produced and collected by the author Tove Jansson and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä, will be recreated. Collaborative displays featuring figures created in the Atelier Fauni, known as the "phantom Moomin dolls," along with precious sketches and studies drawn by Tove in the 1950s-70s, Moomin collections from the 1970s-80s, and symbolic words and columns accompanied by original drawings and replica original drawings, will unravel the worldview of the Moomins, who live in harmony with nature and companions. This exhibition will be held along with the Finnish Glass Art Exhibition.
