Craft Designer Sakuzo Hineno Exhibition

Mino Ceramic Art Museum, Tajimi
Finished
Sakuzo Hineno is a post-war Japanese ceramic designer. Born in 1907 in what is now Iga City, Mie Prefecture, he studied at Tokyo Higher Polytechnic School (now the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University) and later flourished as a designer after working at institutions like the Kyoto National Ceramic Research Institute. After the war, he became an independent designer, based in Mie Prefecture, and worked tirelessly to promote and guide ceramic design in various regions, including Aichi, Gifu, and Shiga. Until he died in 1984, he left a significant legacy as a pioneer in ceramic design.

In 2006, his family donated valuable materials related to Hineno, who had a profound influence on the Mino ceramics industry, to the museum. Among these are works by his close friends and students, Raku ware tea bowls he made himself, and design notebooks. Notably, his 52 design books, which include tableware designs and design collections, were created to guide various research institutions, associations, potteries, and individuals. Through this extensive collection, the exhibition re-examines what Hineno aimed for in his design—"bringing beauty to many people"—and to pass on his teachings to the next generation. Even 40 years after his death, Hineno's designs continue to shine with undiminished allure.
