Craypas is a drawing material created in Japan in 1925. Combining the characteristics of crayon and pastel, Craypas has excellent colorability and extensibility and can be freely mixed to create expressions similar to oil paints. During and after World War II, when oil paints were hard to come by, Craypas became a popular painting medium for many artists, who eventually created works of great originality by taking advantage of its unique qualities.

This exhibition is comprised of works from the collection of the Sakura Art Museum, Osaka, and features a wide range of masterpieces by artists from the Taisho and Showa periods, including Tadashi Yamamoto, who was involved in the development and popularization of the Craypas, Ryuzaburo Umehara, Ryohei Koiso, Taro Okamoto, and many others, to contemporary artists. Through these unique works, visitors will be able to rediscover the potential of Craypas.
