Crime and Punishment - Morioka in the Edo Period as Seen in Crime Records

Morioka History and Culture Museum
Finished
The Edo period was a peaceful time without war. The Edo period was indeed a very rare period in history in which no major armed conflicts occurred for a very long period. However, this does not necessarily mean that people's lives were peaceful. Natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, as well as poor harvests due to cold weather, took many lives. Above all, when people live together in large numbers, quarrels are bound to occur. People have anger and greed, and there are always people who do evil either impulsively or deliberately. In the Edo period (1603-1867), many people committed fights, murders, thefts, and various other crimes, and were tried for them.

Morioka History and Culture Museum has a large collection of historical records related to incidents that occurred in the Morioka domain during the Edo period. These records provide us with a glimpse into the lives of people in the Edo period who made the same mistakes as people today, and at the same time, they also provide us with a glimpse into the different ethical views of the officials who judged crimes than those of the present day. This exhibition focuses on some of the recorded incidents and explores the differences and similarities in the way of thinking about "crime" and "punishment" between the people of the Edo period and today.

Crime records bring us closer to the Edo period and the present through the ever-changing keyword of "crime. These records are mere facts, but they are also reminders that people in the Edo period suffered, loved, feuded, rejoiced, and grieved, just like people today.
