Daisuke Yokota
Daisuke Yokota is an artist who has consistently approached the medium of photography through his own distinctive methods. In his earlier practice, Yokota produced works by subjecting photographs to repeated processes of reproduction and degradation, and by altering photographic materials such as film and photographic paper in the darkroom. Through these techniques, he made the very process of transformation inherent in photography into the core of his work. These works function not only as experiments in photographic expression, but also as fundamental inquiries into the medium itself: a sustained questioning of what photography is.

In contrast, Yokota’s recent series focuses on the midstream area of the Tama River and the wild plants that grow there. Using a large-format 4×5 camera, he engages directly with the landscape and vegetation of the site. In particular, his repeated photographing of wild mustard greens (Brassicaceae) suggests an intense and persistent attraction to what might otherwise be seen as a commonplace weed. This practice points toward a return to the essential question of photography and vision itself: what does it mean to look at the world through a camera?
