Eiji Ina
Eiji Ina is a photographer whose works on modern and contemporary Japanese themes, such as cities, environment, and history, are highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. This exhibition will feature 58 photographs (all in black and white) taken between 1992 and 2006 from his series of photographs of Yasukuni Shrine and the people who gather there.

Ina first visited Yasukuni Shrine on the anniversary of the end of the war in 1989, when he was intrigued by the right-wing people he saw in the plaza in front of the Imperial Palace on the occasion of the death of Emperor Showa (1989). The shrine, which was renamed Yasukuni Shrine in 1879 to commemorate and honor the war dead, has always been associated with the history of war. Those who gathered there included survivors of the Kamikaze Special Attack Squadron, a group of war comrades, members of the Emperor Showa Respect Association, young men who gave a performance of objection, young people dressed in military uniforms and costumes, numerous police officers, members of the media, and many others. The energy that each individual radiated at the Yasukuni Shrine was strong, and Ina captured the aspect of this magnetic field with her thoughts on "What is Japan and what is the nation?" Ina's work is a unique example of his ability to look at the past and future in the present.
