Furukawa Art Museum opened in November 1991 as the only art museum in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. In order for them to be enjoyed by everyone, Tamesaburo Furukawa, the museum's first director, donated artworks Furukawa collected and cherished over many years. 

Furukawa (1890-1993) was a collector of arts and crafts since before World War II. In September 1987, Furukawa founded the Furukawa Foundation with the intention of introducing the public to art through the museum rather than keeping artworks in private collections. After the collection was exhibited and open to the public as a museum preparation room for two years, in March 1989, the Foundation opened the Furukawakai Foundation Salon & Gallery in Naka-ku, Nagoya. During the same year, it joined the Association of Museums of Aichi Prefecture. Opening its doors in April 1991, the Furukawa Art Museum began exhibiting at its current location in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya City. The Aichi Prefectural Board of Education approved it as a museum in October of the same year, and in August 2011, it became a public interest incorporated foundation, renaming itself the Furukawa Chisakukai Foundation.

Around 2800 items make up the collection, including paintings, oil paintings, ceramics, crafts, and manuscripts from the 15th century. In addition to conducting research on the works and artists in the collection, the museum organizes exhibitions and art lectures, publishes catalogs, and produces and screens high-definition programs.
