Emi Mizukami, Naho Wakabayashi
This new project exhibition by Emi Mizukami and Naho Wakabayashi aims to objectify the history of human emotions and images, as well as the progress in politics and technology, through their respective approaches to painting. The exhibition title, "Sea of Tranquility," is derived from the basalt plains on the moon's surface.

Born in the early 1990s, both Mizukami and Wakabayashi are recognized as painters with unique methods and attitudes toward the accumulated images that are visually and mentally perceived. Mizukami creates paintings that layer myths, anecdotes, and traditions from various eras and places, producing paintings that amplify dimensions, materializing the impossible to see. Wakabayashi, using photos and printed materials as sketches, connects subjective memories to the universal unconscious and collective self, transforming them into oil paintings that are shareable, polysemic, and symbolically elusive. Their endeavors can be seen as a reconsideration and extension of phenomenological painting.

With the achievement of lunar landings, the moon is no longer an elusive place. Similarly, due to technological advancements and historical developments, the human mind has moved away from the Homeric era, where it was connected to gods, transforming into a utilitarian mind functionally accepting the surface of the world, despite its limitations. Now, the mind's system is on the verge of transitioning into a unique program detached from humans.

In this context, what kind of world does contemporary painting connect to? The moon, Earth's satellite that reflects the sun's light and serves as a lens projecting something close yet distant, has been a painting plane creating illusions since ancient times. This exhibition questions the narratives on both sides of that lens through the images created by each artist.
