Emika Hosoi
Emika Hosoi's works are placed in trivial gaps in our daily lives. Emika Hosoi's works question our perception of the concept of "works of art," and even have the power to directly interfere with our actions. Rather than exhibiting her work, it might be better described as eroding it. In a living space, her works, dotted along the joints of furniture and walls, transform the original function of the objects to which they are attached.

And while some works, such as Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" and Maurizio Cattelan's "Comedian," are more effective as works of art depending on the space in which they are displayed, her works are in some respects more physical. Hosoi's works are more physical in some respects. They have a form that suggests a purpose, such as a sofa or a steel frame, and they have a shape that invites people to do something, but they have no function and are not allowed to be touched casually. When such pure art is scattered in a space like furniture, people's actions are restricted, and the artwork itself dictates what they can do. In other words, the work creates a space in which we are forced to act due to its efficacy as a work of art.

This exhibition is composed of two spaces, a child's room and a tomb (or church), combined into a single image. Hosoi finds that each of these two spaces have a mutual meaning of sleep = peace of mind: "a child is tucked in by the parents and goes to sleep in peace ⇔ the parents leave the room in peace when they see the child asleep"; or "descendants bury their ancestors and pray for the peace of their souls ⇔ the ancestors feel peace of mind when they see their descendants visiting them". Is this peace of mind obtained through the act of doing something at a certain place, or is it obtained through the space?
