Émile Gallé
Kitazawa Museum of Art in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, will hold a special exhibition to commemorate its 40th anniversary.
Emile Gallé (1846-1904), a French glassworker active from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, incorporated natural motifs such as flowers and insects into his designs, winning the Grand Prix at the Paris Expositions of 1889 and 1900.

A horticultural enthusiast and botanist by trade, Galle sought to convey the vibrancy of life rather than simply copy plants and insects. Behind this approach to nature can be traced the influence of Japonisme, which was popular in Europe at the time.

This exhibition, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the museum's opening, explores Gallé's passion for nature through the Kitazawa Museum of Art's collection of Art Nouveau masterpieces, based on his motto, "My roots are deep in the forest," which he posted at the entrance to his workshop.
