Enjoying Mother Goose

Karuizawa Picturebook Museum
Finished
"Mother Goose" typically refers to a collection of traditional nursery rhymes passed down in Britain. In Japan, Mother Goose rhymes such as "London Bridge" and "The Death and Burial of Cock Robin" are famous.

The term "Mother Goose" originates from the French writer Charles Perrault's collection of folk tales titled "Histoires ou contes du temps passé" (1697). Among the illustrations in Perrault's fairy tales, the phrase "Contes de ma mère l’Oye" (Tales of my Mother Goose) is written, which was translated into English as "Mother Goose" in the 1729 edition. Perrault's tales were popular in literary salons among the nobility in Paris at the time, and the 1729 English translation also received acclaim. Thus, the term "Mother Goose" began to spread. Around this time, there was a movement in England to compile traditional nursery rhymes. In the late 1700s, John Newbery, a London merchant considered the first publisher of children's books, published "Mother Goose's Melody," further associating nursery rhymes with Mother Goose.

As collections of Mother Goose rhymes were compiled, there emerged attempts to classify them. For example, J.O. Halliwell, a British literary scholar, attempted the first classification of Mother Goose rhymes in "The Nursery Rhymes of England" (1842). In the 5th edition of "The Nursery Rhymes of England," Halliwell classified Mother Goose rhymes into 18 categories such as riddles and cumulative songs. Thus, Mother Goose encompasses various types of rhymes. British people grew up listening to these Mother Goose rhymes, fostering English pronunciation, rhythm, and humor. Mother Goose has also been used as material in newspapers, novels, and stories like Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass." Therefore, Mother Goose is considered an essential element in learning English, alongside Shakespeare and the Bible. Furthermore, the whimsical and fantastical poems of Mother Goose have attracted the interest of many painters. Each painter's individuality is reflected in how they depict Mother Goose.

In this exhibition, while featuring Mother Goose found in famous works such as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," illustrations of Mother Goose by various British painters such as Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, and Arthur Rackham will be displayed.
