Enrico Isamu Oyama
Since receiving his MFA at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Enrico Isamu Oyama has been working internationally, having established studios in Brooklyn, New York and Tokyo. Developing the unique Quick Turn Structure (QTS) motif, a reinterpretation of aerosol writing figuration, Oyama’s work creates a nexus between contemporary art and street culture - combining the artist's three-dimensional physical actions with a two-dimensional flatness. The pivotal pieces in “Subliminal Storm” are Snow Noise (2014 / 2020), a work of video, and FFIGURATI #10 (2010), a painting featuring QTS, which is also the base image of Snow Noise, together making bold use of the space surrounding the gallery. Oyama's thinking, which regards street art as the urban unconscious, is expressed by storm-like QTS videos - by projecting these onto the inorganic walls of the gallery, markedly different to the walls of white cubes, they will be presented as 'signals emanating from the urban and visual unconscious'.
