Eyes on Kanagawa: The Observer and the Observed

Kanagawa Prefectural Museum Of Cultural History
Finished
About 170 years ago, in the mid-19th century, interactions with the Western world, which had been interrupted by the policy of "sakoku" (closed country), were resumed. What was "Kanagawa" like during this period? Under the "sakoku" system, Japan had developed its unique culture under a stable society, but with the arrival of Westerners, Japan began to transform. The Westerners who visited Japan in the early years of "opening" documented the pre-transformation landscape through diverse descriptions, including paintings and photographs.

Titled "Eyes on Kanagawa," this exhibition presents paintings, photographs, travelogues, and diaries recorded by Westerners who came to Japan after the mid-19th century when global travel became feasible and globalization reached a new phase. It focuses on the original landscapes of "Kanagawa" and the lifestyles of its people as seen through the eyes of these visitors.

What aspects of the extraordinary landscapes of "Kanagawa" captured their interest, and how did they convey these to other Westerners? By examining what we consider normal through the eyes of others, why not rediscover the charm of "Kanagawa"?

[Note] *This exhibition includes the Edo period before Kanagawa Prefecture was established, so the term "Kanagawa" also encompasses the surrounding areas of present-day Kanagawa Prefecture.
