Eyes on the Orient - Ceramics from the Early Collection of Kyoto College of Technology

Kyoto Institute of Technology Museum and Archives
Finished
One of the predecessors of Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyoto Craft High School (established in 1902), purchased numerous "reference items" as teaching materials. These items were not only shown to students during lectures and practical sessions but were also widely displayed to people involved in traditional industries in the local Kyoto area.

Among the reference items purchased during the Kyoto Craft High School era are well-known examples such as posters by Lautrec and Klimt, Art Nouveau ceramics, and Tiffany glassware. Since the design instruction at the high school focused on conveying the cutting-edge design trends of Europe and America, many exhibitions have been organized to showcase European and American art and craft pieces. However, the high school did not limit their acquisitions to Western arts and crafts; they also collected Japanese antiques, as well as Asian crafts and ethnic costumes.

This exhibition will present ceramics from the Chinese mainland and the Korean Peninsula that were collected in the early years of the high school, which have not received much attention until now. The collection includes artifacts from the Han Dynasty and earthenware made in Silla during the Three Kingdoms period. This exhibition will reveal lesser-known aspects of the design education at Kyoto Craft High School.

Enjoy exploring the East Asian ceramics collected during the late Meiji and Taisho periods, which offer a somewhat surprising perspective on the East during that time.
