Artists

Chiharu Shiota, Sumi Kanazawa, Soh Souen
This exhibition by Chiharu Shiota, Sumi Kanazawa, and Soh Souen, commemorates the 55th anniversary of Kyoto Seika University.

The three artists are from different generations, but each majored in Western-style painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at TUFS. Currently, they are all working outside the category of "painting" in a wide range of expressive fields, including installations in which the entire space is used as a work of art, works on the theme of the history and memory of a place, and performances that explore "what is the self" through the use of their bodies. Shiota, who moved to Germany after graduating from university, Kanazawa, who grew up as a third-generation Korean living in Japan, and Soh, who changed his artist name in 2020, all share the question of identity at the core of their work.

The "Fathom" in the exhibition title is derived from the width of a person's arms when they are held out to the left and right and refers to the unit used to measure the depth of water (6 feet = 183 cm). Derived from this, it is also used to mean "to understand" or "to explore. It symbolically represents the attitude and method of the three artists, who are trying to explore and reveal something through their physical actions.
