N project is pleased to present "Field of Flux," a group exhibition by five Japanese artists from Matsumaya Studio, from September 8 (Fri) to October 5 (Thu), 2023.
At Tomokazu Matsuyamaʼs studio, a vast 750 square meter space on the top floor of a building in Greenpoint, located in the northernmost part of Brooklyn, New York, a total of 28 staff members participate in the production of his works.
Many of the members are artists themselves. Sharing Matsuyamaʼs philosophy and production style, they are actively exhibiting their works in New York and internationally as well.
This is the first exhibition in Japan to bring together five of these artists: Tsukasa Kanawa, Mariko Fujimoto, Taishi Shingu, Takura Suzuki, and Tatsuya Matsushita.

Tsukasa Kanawa (b. 1986) was born in Aichi Prefecture and moved to New York after graduating from the Design Department of Nagoya City Industrial Arts High School in 2005. Inspired by clubbing and house and techno dance parties, Kanawaʼs paintings depict the fusion of music and movement with his own experiences.

Mariko Fujimoto (b. 1991) graduated from Tama Art University with a degree in oil painting, and currently lives and works in New York. The artist regards her paintings as relatable personal picture diaries, combining figures with striking gazes, landscapes, and imaginary images, evoking empathy and nostalgia.

Taishi Shingu (b. 1985) graduated from the Department of Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, and moved to New York in 2021, where he currently works as a painting staff member at Matsuyama Studio. His interest in "the field in which the meaning of things arises" functions as the foundation of his inspiration, and his works suggest new proposals and ideas for the issues affecting today's information-oriented society.

Takura Suzuki (b. 1996) received his degree in painting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2019 and his degree in visual arts from Washington University in St. Louis in 2021. Following his graduation, he transferred to New York, where he now lives and works. Focusing on the relationship between contemporary digital technology and humans, Suzuki's works develop a worldview that metaphorically depicts how this relationship is shaping today's society.

Tatsuya Matsushita (b. 1982) graduated from the Department of Painting, Tokyo University of the Arts, with a major in Oil Painting. He exhibited actively in Tokyo before relocating to New York in 2022. He refers to the dark, sludgy, eerie aspect of past Japanese art expression as "visual tactility," and by incorporating this aspect heavily into his works, he aims to create contemporary art that emerges from a connection with Japanese modern art.

The exhibition has been titled “Field of Flux” in reference to the 5 artistsʼ respective explorations of the relative concepts of “things that last” and “things that are washed away” within their works.
