Five Doors to Encounter Art

Kure Municipal Museum of Art
Finished
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the current Kure City, which was formed through the merger with neighboring towns and villages.
Today, Kure is home to several museums, including the Kure Municipal Museum of Art, founded in 1982. In Shimokamagari-cho, you can find the Rantokaku Museum of Art, which houses important works of modern and contemporary Japanese art, and the Sannose Gohonjin Museum of Art, known for its collection of paintings by Kunitaro Suda. These museums, along with other cultural and historical facilities, were developed as part of the “Garden Island Concept,” which aims to cultivate the entire island as a garden-like cultural space.

In addition, the Yasuura History and Folklore Museum (Minami Kunzo Memorial Hall) was established in 1985 in Yasuura-cho, the birthplace of artist Kunzo Minami. The museum was created by renovating his former residence and studio.

This exhibition introduces the collections of Kure’s museums through five themes. Some of the works can be experienced through touch. We hope this exhibition serves as an opportunity for visitors to encounter art and museums, and opens a door to new perspectives on familiar artworks.
