Agnès b. gallery boutique is pleased to present "Gentlemen's Club," a solo exhibition by French photographer François Prost from March 18 to April 16. In 2019, François Prost drove east to west across the United States from Miami to Los Angeles to produce "Gentlemen's Club", a series of photographs of strip clubs' facades. This exhibition will feature 29 works from "Gentlemen's Club" (Fisheye, 2021), a book of photographs documenting the series, as well as a video documenting the road trip.
Prost’s camera is directed at the facades of strip clubs in broad daylight along roadsides and next to the supermarkets or toyshops in commercial areas. Shot from a medium distance, there is neither the gaudy glow of neon lights nor the people coming as if they were enjoying a party. Instead, the geometric forms of the architecture and the pastel colors, which are enhanced by the strong sunlight, are captured by his camera in a neutral way.
Prost found it interesting to document the places that evoke sexuality and gender in an area known for its conservative and extreme Puritanism. The elements that make up the facade, such as the name, typography, and colors of the store, as well as the hierarchy of the people who pass by the store in broad
daylight, reveal a sociological aspect, and provide a glimpse into the history of the city and the people who live there, and at the same time, through photographs of architecture taken in such a nostalgic and fantastical way that it becomes difficult to tell whether they are reality or fiction, he humorously questions our contradictions and preconceived notions.
