Since the pioneering “Kaidan Botan Doro" by Sanyutei Encho (first published in 1884), many shorthand books on rakugo, kodan, and other forms of entertainment have been published up to the present day, many of which are accompanied by illustrations. It is well known that entertainment shorthand has a close relationship with modern literature, as evidenced by the hints of the unification of speech and writing, but the illustrations that accompanied shorthand also had a close relationship with the publications of the time, such as literary magazines. Many of the artists who drew the frontispieces and illustrations for shorthand also drew illustrations for literary magazines and monographs, mainly novels, and the names of famous artists of the time can often be seen.

At first, frontispieces and illustrations played the role of impressing readers with images of characters and certain scenes from the story, while at the same time adding glamour to the book itself, much like today's photogravure, but the role of pictures changed with the spread of the printed word and changes in the reading environment.

This exhibition looks at the relationship between the pictures and the text of shorthand, and how it has changed over the years, while following the flow of the frontispieces and illustrations, focusing on shorthand books in the collection of the National Theatre of Japan.
