Fukutomi Taro Collection: The Passion of the Cabaret Magnate

Iwate Museum of Art
Finished
Taro Fukutomi (1931-2018), known as the "King of Cabaret" in the Showa period (1926-1989), was a successful businessman who opened cabarets throughout Japan as the country experienced rapid postwar economic growth. He also appeared on television and radio programs, where his witty and humorous stories gained popularity, earning him the nickname "Cabaret Taro."

He was also passionate about collecting artwork, and sought out not only famous artists but also unappreciated painters if they suited his own sensibilities, building a "Fukutomi Collection" that set him apart from others. He also deepened his understanding of artworks based on materials and information, and introduced his collections to the public through his writings and lectures.

This exhibition features more than 80 of his favorite paintings from the dawn of Western-style painting in the Meiji period to war paintings, including the bi-ga beauty paintings of Kiyokata Kaburaki, the Japanese-style painter who inspired his collection. Under the supervision of art historian Yuji Yamashita, who was a close friend of Fukutomi during his lifetime, this is the first exhibition to reveal the entire collection, focusing on Fukutomi's aesthetic sense as a collector.
