Fumiko Imano
Fumiko Imano has been in charge of photography for Loewe's publications for eight seasons since 2018 and has also designed shoes for Vans using her work, and is highly regarded for her collaborations with fashion. Her signature work is a series of photomontages in which self-portraits taken with a 35mm camera are cut and pasted to create twin motifs. The images are innocent, nostalgic, and full of humor in the style of family portraits that make you smile. On the other hand, the lines cut with scissors and joined together clearly show that they are fictional. The photomontage, which is made simply by hand in the digital age, is at once playful and a sober insight into identity, a visual language for a new narrative.
The common thread that runs through Imano's work is a sense of travel. She never stays in one place, but always continues her journey in search of something. Her work is a record of that process, and she values the thoughts and sensations that are triggered by encounters with the new images she encounters along the way.
For her fourth solo exhibition at Kosaku Kanechika, she will exhibit her new series “Le Fumistol," which captures new experiences of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, when severe restrictions were set on leaving the house in many places, she visited Paris. On that trip, Imano encountered a luxury hotel in a deserted Paris. During the pandemic, the things that had sustained our lives until then were suddenly shaken, and we were forced to confront things that we did not need to think or feel before. What did Imano encounter and feel in this situation of existential anxiety?
This exhibition consists of all new works (about 35 pieces). In addition to photographs, drawings will be exhibited for the first time.
