Akiko Takeuchi
Akiko Takeuchi, a painter born in Kumamoto City, settled in Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture in 2020 after working in Tokyo and other places. In this peaceful town overlooking the Shiranui Sea, surrounded by rich nature, Takeuchi depicts everyday life in fresh colors and shapes. This exhibition presents new and recent works by Takeuchi, who now lives in Amakusa.

Takeuchi's two most important elements in creating her works are the "emptiness" and "poetry" of the title. To be "empty (kara/ku)" means to invite various possibilities. A body that is empty can open doors to encounter new worlds beyond itself. And "poetry" is created from the sky, including the colors and shapes depicted and the titles. Takeuchi says, "Like a Y-junction, a picture comes from one side and words come from the other, and when they meet, they become one path toward completion. Takeuchi makes herself an empty vessel and surrenders herself to the surrounding landscape and support. As she moves her paintbrush in dialogue, the words come to her like a bird swooping down from the sky and gently perching on a branch. Then the painting and the words go hand in hand toward completion.
