Do you know that there was an art gallery in Nara called Gallery Nishida ?
Gallery Nishida was opened by Kosaku Nishida in 1982 near the JR station in Nara. It was a commercial gallery that was famous in the contemporary art world in Kansai and Tokyo at the time (until around 2000) as ‘an amazing gallery that held exhibitions of amazing artists’.The reason why it was so amazing was that it had the foresight to invite important artists and works from Japan and abroad to Nara, which even those in the art world would be surprised to find were not easily seen even in the Tokyo metropolitan area. At the same time, Mr Nishida purchased and stored many of these works, thus enriching the Nishida Collection.

In 2023, Mr Nishida passed away and the gallery regrettably closed down, leaving behind many of his art collections, which are now under the control of a court-appointed liquidator of inherited property. The gallery had a chance to hear from Lawyer Koshiro of Sorairo Law Office, who was appointed as the liquidator of Nishida's estate, and decided to organise an exhibition and sale of selected important works. Gallery Out of Place assisted with the sorting and clearing of the collection.

Lawyer Koshiro and Gallery Out of Place believe that these useful and essential materials should be preserved in the event of a future movement to reflect on the art trends of the 80s and 90s in Nara and the Kansai region. We are holding this exhibition with the hope that the valuable artworks and related materials left behind in Nara will not be dispersed to other places, but will remain here (in the Kansai cultural sphere) and be passed on to the next generation.
We hope that as many people as possible will visit this exhibition and see these wonderful works with their own eyes, and collect them.
