Generational Change from Takahashi Yuichi to Kuroda Seiki

Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts
Finished

Artists

Yuichi Takahashi, Seiki Kuroda, Naojiro Harada, Keiichiro Kume et al.
In 1894, Takahashi Yuichi, a pioneer of Western-style painting in the Meiji era, passed away. The previous year, in 1893, Kuroda Seiki returned to Japan from France, introducing a new style of Western painting called "Gaiko-ha." Yuichi and Kuroda, influential figures in Japanese Western-style painting and often dubbed the "fathers of modern Western-style painting," seemed to exchange roles. This exhibition explores their styles with other painters of their era, highlighting the significant generational shift in Meiji Western-style painting.
