Artists

George Lilanga
This exhibition will feature paintings by Tanzanian artist George Lilanga (1943-2005).

Tanzania is located in East Africa and is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest peak. Lilanga was from the Makonde tribe in southeastern Tanzania. The Makonde are an ethnic group known for their wood carvings, and Lilanga began his career as a woodcarver.

Later, he moved to the capital, Dar es Salaam, where he joined the 'House of Art' and began painting. He quickly gained high acclaim as a painter. While Tanzania has a group of artists known as the Tinga Tinga school who depict animals, Lilanga consistently painted Shetani (spirits) instead.

The Shetani are free spirits that appear in Lilanga's dreams. They are liberated from all physical constraints, doing whatever they please, but always with a smile that soothes the hearts of those who see them.
