HaaT "Timeless"

Issey Miyake Ginza | Cube
Finished
The origins of the HaaT series made in India, “HaaTH”, lie in ASHA BY MDS, which was launched in 1984. Made in collaboration with a workshop based in Ahmedabad, India, “HaaTH” presented clothing that was both luxurious and comfortable, made through a process of clothes-making that utilized local natural materials and delicate traditional techniques.

The spirit of clothes-making exemplified by ASHA BY MDS was succeeded by HaaT, which launched in 2000. Combining India’s outstanding craftsmanship with modern sensibilities, the journey of ASHA BY MDS continues today as HaaTH.

This exhibition features a selection of works by photographer Tomio Seike from the 1988 book, ASHA BY MDS, kindly donated by Motoko Naruse, who was art director of the catalogue at the time. It showcases newly shot footage from the workshop in India. It documents the skill and time involved in the craftspeople’s handiwork, as well as the thought processes behind their repeated actions. The exhibition recreates and presents some of the clothing that appeared in the 1988 book.

Textile and craftsmanship born from a deep understanding of techniques and materials are rooted in Indian culture and living. Please join us to experience the spirit of craftsmanship that developed from ASHA BY MDS to HaaT.
