Harumi Yahata
Beautiful flowers in full bloom, overflowing greenery bathed in dazzling light. Harumi Yahata's beautiful dyeing world will be introduced here, where colorful plants fill the large screen.

Yahata (b. 1956) studied dyeing at the Kyoto City University of Arts. In the early 1990s, Yahata became known as a standard-breaking artist who broke out of the boundaries of dyeing by exhibiting her "Water Series," in which she used kozo paper as a base and dynamically developed classical patterns such as "Seigaiha" (blue ocean waves) on a four-panel folding screen using the techniques of "kata" (mold) and "bun" (stencil).

Later, while utilizing traditional techniques such as wax-dyeing and collage of gold and silver leaf, Yahata introduced screen printing, which can be mass-produced, and adopted the color sense of the times, thereby liberating the worldview of conventional dyeing one after another.

In the 2000s, Yahata developed a dyeing technique called "shaped dye," a type of tie-dyeing, in which dye is poured into grooves formed by uneven surfaces on the cloth. In recent years, Yahata's challenge to incorporate digital technology, such as computer image processing and inkjet printing, continues to expand the horizon of dyeing expression.

Harumi Yahata, who continues to open up colors, engage in technological innovation, and transmit the appeal of new dyeing, will be on display from her early days in the 1990s to her latest works in 2023.
