Hian Shimizu
Hian Shimizu (1883-1975) was a talented poet born in Takahashi City, known for excelling in the three arts of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. After graduating from the Law Department of Kyoto Imperial University, he worked as a judicial officer and later transitioned to a banking career. He served in various locations across Japan, including Tokyo, Akita, Aomori, and Osaka. In 1930, he assumed the position of the Mayor of Nikko Town in Tochigi Prefecture. It was during this time that he started publishing tanka poetry, which garnered attention in the literary world. Upon his retirement, he devoted himself to the creation of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. In his late 80s, he blossomed into a unique artist characterized by strength and flexibility. In 1966, he was honored to be appointed as a participant in the Imperial Poetry Reading (Mikakunin Shijin) at the Imperial Palace, where he recited the poem "In the gentle purple morning, the plaintive bush warbler's song reaches my ears from the mountain." His works radiate culture and his charming personality, earning the affection of many people.

To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Hiranobu Shimizu's birth, this exhibition presents around 40 pieces of his work that have been inherited by his family.
