Hokusai Katsushika, Harunobu Suzuki, Utamaro Kitagawa, Hiroshige Utagawa, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Koson Ohara et al.
Since opening in 1986, the Adachi City Museum has been dedicated to the discovery and collection of historical and artistic materials associated with Adachi City. Today, its holdings include more than a thousand ukiyo-e prints. Centered on items formerly owned by Matsukawa Saburō, the wide-ranging collection begins with early ukiyo-e artist Okumura Masanobu, covers popular artists like Suzuki Harunobu (who pioneered full-color nishiki-e), Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige, and extends even to artists of the Meiji period such as Kobayashi Kiyochika. The rarity and vision of the collection, which includes masterworks by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who remains popular today, and Ohara Koson, whose work has been drawing notice in recent years, are key aspects of the collection’s appeal. The full breadth of this collection will be introduced across four exhibition periods.
