Hiraku Project Vol. 14 Naofumi Maruyama "Kicking the Waterー Sengokuhara"

Artists

Naofumi Maruyama, Jun Aoki
The Hiraku Project is a series of exhibitions introducing contemporary artworks by recipients of the Pola Art Foundation Grant for Emerging Artists. The 14th edition will feature Naofumi Maruyama, a leading Japanese contemporary artist who has held numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad and whose works are in the collections of major museums in Japan.
Maruyama has been painting consistently since the beginning of his career in the 1990s. Unlike the traditional method of painting on canvas, Maruyama paints horizontally on the floor with a cotton cloth soaked in water. The boundaries of the forms in his paintings waver ambiguously and, together with the vivid acrylic colors, create a dreamlike world.
The title of this exhibition reflects Maruyama's awareness of the world and our uncertainty. Just as kicking up a puddle causes the quiet world reflected on the water's surface to collapse, he portrays the possibility that the world we have come to know could change completely.
Architect Jun Aoki, a close friend of Maruyama, will design the exhibition space. Together they will create an exhibition space wrapped in a thin shining veil, transporting the audience to a new and unknown world.
