The Hiraku Project is an exhibition series that introduces artists who have received grants from the Pola Art Foundation. In its 15th installment, the project presents Yasuaki Onishi, known for creating large-scale installations through a sculptural approach to space, showcased both domestically and internationally.

Having studied sculpture during university, Onishi developed an interest in the relationship between positive and negative spaces, as well as the comprehension of the surroundings rather than the object itself, stemming from his experience in mold-making tasks. Throughout his career, he has consistently explored themes such as margins, voids, volumes, and boundaries.

In this exhibition, Onishi showcases new works using copper foil as a material. Copper foil plays a crucial role inside many electronic devices but often goes unnoticed by the human eye. Onishi detaches copper foil from its functional context, molds it by covering it with river stones and striking it, and assembles it into large-scale installations.

The surfaces of countless stones, having traversed the earth's surface over an extended period, carry the accumulated memory of incomprehensible time, alongside the physical losses due to abrasion and polishing. Onishi's copper foil creations, presented through molding, suggest the absence/presence inherent in the material. They also indicate the importance of not only understanding the surface but also enriching one's imagination to recognize things, emphasizing that even with imagination, one cannot comprehend everything.

Focusing on the absent and invisible, Onishi's artworks contribute to helping to perceive this complex and diverse world with a more liberated and flexible sensibility.
