Hiromitsu Kuroo
Hiromitsu Kuroo's works include two series, "Folded Painting" and "Bleach Painting. For this exhibition, Kuroo will present his "Bleach Painting" series, in which he bleaches canvas fabrics with household bleach and paints collages of the bleached fabrics.
After living and working in New York for 18 years, Kuroo interacted with artists from many different countries and came to want to reflect his own Japanese identity in his work. As a result, he has been showing a series of "Folded Painting" series, in which canvases are folded like origami and collaged together to create three-dimensional works.
The artist was the first Japanese artist to participate in the artist-in-residence program offered by Golden Artist Colors, but after the pandemic a few years ago, the situation changed drastically. With the spread of COVID-19 in New York City and restrictions on leaving the house, it became difficult to obtain the materials necessary for production, and he began to work using everyday items as substitutes. Thus, the "Bleach Painting" series was born.
Kuroo was strongly influenced by the Indian murals he came into contact with while camping in Utah and Colorado in the United States. He feels that the primitive expression painted at that time, with its intense sunlight and fear of animals and other things at night, intersects with the way of expression created during the pandemic a few years ago.
He returned to Japan last year and is currently devoting himself to production at his studio in Saitama Prefecture. I feel that it is very significant to be able to present the methods of expression forged in the repressed everyday life in today's situation of expanding openness. The exhibition will be inclusive from the first to the second floor of the venue.
