Hiroshige Utagawa
This exhibition returns by popular request for the first time in six years.

Hiroshige Utagawa was a painter who created a new style of landscape painting in Ukiyoe at the end of the Edo period and had a great influence on the art world as far away as Europe. Born into a family of fire extinguishers in the Tokugawa shogunate, Utagawa was initiated into the ukiyo-e tradition by Toyohiro of the Utagawa school. After a period of study, he began to produce famous place paintings (nishiki-e) in earnest around 1831 and firmly established himself as a landscape painter.

In 1883, he published the internationally acclaimed "Hoei-do version of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" which was an explosive success. The scenery of the journey, the human emotions, and the natural landscapes will remain forever in the history of prints.

In addition, the outstanding colors and composition of the prints have moved many people. In addition to his landscape prints that capture the subtle changes in nature, Utagawa, whose most famous work is Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" also left behind many flower-and-bird prints and paintings that beautifully express poetic sentiment and a sense of the seasons.

The museum's "Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido" is said to be the first edition of the Hoei-do prints printed in the Edo period and was printed during Hiroshige's lifetime.
