Hiroshige Utagawa
Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) is internationally acclaimed for his influence on modern Western painters such as Monet and van Gogh. His vivid indigo, known as "Hiroshige Blue," and his innovative compositions continue to fascinate people around the world.

Among his works, "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" is a masterpiece of Ukiyo-e prints, depicting the journey from Nihonbashi in Edo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto. Beginning with the Hoeido edition (originally a joint edition with Senkakudo), which he began publishing in 1833, Utagawa produced more than 20 different editions of the Tokaido series throughout his lifetime.

This exhibition brings together the 55 Hoeido prints that made Hiroshige famous and the 55 Marusei prints, published 16 years after the Hoeido editions, of which only a few remain.

Visitors are invited to compare the two completely different compositions, colors, seasons, and so on, and discover the fascination of Ukiyoe that dominated the era.
