Hiroshige Utagawa, Goyo Hashiguchi
Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Goyo Hashiguchi (1881-1921), on the other hand, was known as the "Taisho no Utamaro" for his outstanding bijin-ga prints created in the Taisho period using Edo period nishiki-e (multicolor woodblock prints) techniques. As a dedicated Ukiyo-e scholar, Hashiguchi also devoted himself to reprinting masterpieces from the Edo period.

In the late Edo period, when Utagawa was active, the development of transportation networks and the economic freedom of the people led to increased enthusiasm for travel among the general public, and many series of nishiki-e (brocade pictures) depicting the highways were produced. Among these, the Tokaido Highway connecting Edo and Kyoto was most frequently depicted, and the Hoeido edition of Hiroshige's "Tokaido Gojyosantsugi no Nouchi" (published around 1833-34 (Tempo 4-5)) sparked its popularity. This work, which incorporated seasonal and climatic changes into its depiction of the landscape and lyrically depicted the scenery along the highway, made Utagawa a popular landscape painter and, together with Hokusai Katsushika, a leading figure in the ukiyo-e world at the end of the Edo period.

This exhibition features a total of 60 woodblock reproductions of Utagawa's work from "Hoei-do-ita Tokaido Gojusankei Ganga" (Hiroshige Painting: Scenes from Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido Highway), a reprint of a book compiled and supervised by Hashiguchi and published by Iwanami Shoten in 1918-19. Because of its popularity, a huge number of reproductions were made during the Edo period (1603-1868), but as later reproductions were made, some of them lost their original atmosphere due to plate wear and color changes. In reprinting the prints, Hashiguchi selected the best prints from several prints and used paper similar to that selected by Utagawa.
