Hitsuji, Mai Takada
"Ogishiro" refers to a marker for guiding divine spirits. Traditionally, it began as a way to welcome deities to sacred mountains called "shimeyama." Over time, its form has evolved, appearing in familiar objects such as carp streamers and teru teru bozu dolls, and it remains present in daily life.

The animistic sensibility of expecting protection from sacred beings residing in mountains, trees, or man-made objects is deeply ingrained in those of us raised in Japan from a young age. The act of creating art is closely tied to such wishes and prayers.

When talismans, amulets, and shrine-like structures, which serve as protection or to ward off evil spirits, from a contemporary perspective are reconsidered, what forms might they take? This exhibition, titled "Ogishiro," explores these possibilities from the viewpoints of two artists, each presenting their unique creations.
