The Sumida Hokusai Museum
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika
A culture of entertainment that the common people could enjoy flourished during the Edo period, such as comic poetry (kyoka), humorous books, and storytelling (rakugo), increasing the number of "seeds of smiles" that brought joy to people's lives. Hokusai and Hokusai's disciples skillfully captured a wide range of smiles, from smiles and bashful laughter to mysterious and peculiar humor. Furthermore, Hokusai's humorous art series is designed to evoke laughter. This exhibition introduces a variety of works related to smiles created by Hokusai and Hokusai's disciples.
