Hokusai Katsushika
This exhibition is a specialized introduction to "Shinpen Suikoden", the longest volume of Hokusai Katsushika's illustrated works for reading books.

"Suikoden" is a full-length novel written during the Ming Dynasty in China, and is considered one of the four great novels along with "Sanguozhi Yanyi," "Journey to the West," and "Jinbeibai. It depicts the story of one hundred and eight great men, led by Song Jiang, the leader of a band of thieves, who gather at Liangshan Daku during the reign of Emperor Hui Zong of the Song Dynasty. In Japan, in the mid-Edo period, many translated books were produced based on "Tongsan Chuugi Suiden" translated by Okajima Kaisan. One such work was "Shinpen Suikoden" (New Water Margin Legend), which was edited and translated by Kyokutei Bakin and Takaiyama, and illustrated by Katsushika Hokusai.

The “Shinpen Suikoden" was published from 1805 and consisted of a total of 91 volumes in nine parts. As the title "Water Margin Legend" implies, the book was different from the previous translation books in that many illustrations were added to make it easier to visualize each scene, and the tension-filled scenes greatly entertained readers. The illustration in the early part of the book, in which demons sealed in the Fushimaden are released, is one of the most beautiful examples of Hokusai's daring imagination and compositional skills. The scene realistically and dramatically depicts a group of demons lurking in the radiant light and people startled by their presence.
This exhibition features many of Hokusai's illustrations that unravel the epic story of Suikoden.
