Artists

Houmi Sakata
Houmi Sakata works in black and white. Based in Tokyo and London, Sakata has been creating photographic works based on portraits, capturing signs of fashion and the street, and says that the value and limits of communication between the self and others are through the camera (lens). Doubts about mutual understanding, which cannot be uniform and is bound by uncertainty, led the journey.

By looking at the invisible gap that exists between the two, this exhibition reveals the intensity of Sakata's interest in the object, which instinctively emerges toward the subject or object that is confronted. Sakata's exploration of the unexplainable relationships between people, people and animals, and people and objects in the process of production led to a series of works that find a diverse balance of massless communication as their subject matter, obeying only the laws of visualization of images, regardless of their artifice.

The "balance" here belongs either to an intentionality that includes authorship or to a fortuitous outcome, meaning that the photographs are able to move freely between the two. Each work is an expression of the simple quality of the artist's body and her impulse to seek the "perfect moment" in the midst of instability.
