This exhibition focuses on “the male nude,” bringing together diverse representations of the male body by contemporary artists with different approaches to gender, sexuality, and expression. It explores both the reception and potential of male representation in art.
In Japan, “the nude” is still strongly associated with the female body. Expressions of the body and sexuality have long been shaped by fixed ideas and social norms, leaving deep-rooted influences on artists and viewers. Amid these shifting values, what have artists sought in representing “the human,” and what has been expected of them? We hope this exhibition offers a chance to reconsider these questions.
Through the motif of the male nude, the exhibition invites viewers to encounter the different approaches and backgrounds of each artist, and to experience the richness and profundity of expressing the human being.
