Ieyasu and Tokaido - Depictions by Hiroshige

Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hiroshige Utagawa et al.
Ieyasu Tokugawa, who had consolidated his power after winning the Battle of Sekigahara, set about building the Tokaido Highway linking Edo (now Tokyo), his castle, to Kyosaka (Kyoto and Osaka). Ieyasu established various inns, and as the highway was developed, many people and goods came and went along the route. Against the backdrop of this boom, Hiroshige Utagawa's "Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no ukiyo-e" series of works, including "Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no nouchi" (Hoei-do version), was born.

This exhibition introduces Ieyasu's footprints on the "Tokaido Highway," focusing on Hiroshige's "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" series of works.
*All paintings will be replaced during each exhibition period.
