In Praise of Light and Shadow - Modern Japan's First Western-Style Painting Collection

Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum
Finished
Modern Western-style painting, which forms part of the Sumitomo Collection, began when Kichizaemon Tomozumi (Shunsui) Sumitomo acquired two oil paintings by the Impressionist painter Monet in Paris during his tour of Europe and the United States in 1897. Although French painting at the end of the 19th century showed the gradual decline of the classical realism school along with the rise of Impressionism, Shunsui's collection of Western-style paintings included both Impressionist and classical works of the same period. In addition, the Sumitomo Western-style painting collection was the first full-scale collection of Western-style paintings in Japan after the Meiji Restoration.

This exhibition introduces a number of modern Western-style paintings nourished by the two streams of Impressionism, which pursued light, and the Classical School, which pursued a sense of reality through shadows.
