This exhibition is the result of the second edition of the creative residency, YARITORI, a collaboration between the Portuguese Cultural Centre and Paradise AIR.
During her residency, Olga Sanina — a visual artist from Lisbon, currently based in the south of France — sought to collect elements from trees that survived two major tragedies in Tokyo: the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the bombings the Japanese capital endured during World War II.
By working with this living heritage of the city, Olga Sanina weaves a connection between past and present through the creation of herbariums and a series of works in which she uses the leaves of these trees as raw material. Her approach is unique and deeply personal, aiming to keep alive the physical memory of these places in a search for their timelessness, while also serving as a testament to the resilience of nature.
