"Insight" is a series of themed exhibitions featuring works by artists from Yoshimi Arts and the gallery collection. 29th in the series, "From The 80s" will focus on works by Minako Nishiyama, whose works are currently on display in the collections of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. The theme of this year's exhibition is "From The 80s" and will focus on Nishiyama's works created in the 80s and 90s.
The 1980s was the "era of women" as the Equal Employment Opportunity Law was enacted in 1986. In the art world, as Yoshiaki Shinohara introduced about 40 young female artists in his feature article "Bijutsu no Choshojo-tachi" in the August 1986 issue of Bijutsu Techo (Bijutsu Shuppansha), many female artists were beginning to appear in the world. Nishiyama has always testified that she was able to create her works freely because of the success of the women artists of the 1980s, a generation older than her own. There was an openness to sexuality, and there was a place for works dealing with sexuality and their expression.
This exhibition will feature works by Minako Nishiyama, Shigeru Izumi and Natsuyuki Nakanishi from the 1980s, and Katsuo Tachi's 1991 drawings, which will be exhibited for the first time. In addition, this exhibition will feature works by Rachel Adams exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Saatchi Gallery, as well as representative three-dimensional works from the same series, and works by Yugo Kohrogi, an artist selected for this year's "VOCA 2023: New Artists on the Plane" (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo).
