Iwao Ikeda
Despite producing excellent work, Iwao Ikeda is unfortunately not well known to the general public. Ikeda's work, created using the traditional Japanese craft techniques of bamboo and lacquer, transcends the genres of bamboo and lacquer art and strikes a chord with the Japanese people.

The first Ikeda family was commissioned by the great tea master of the modern era, Takashi Masuda, to copy the gourd baskets owned by Enshu Kobori, and the name "Hyoa" was bestowed upon the family by Masuda for the bamboo baskets they created in response to his request. Iwao Ikeda was born in Tokyo in 1940 as the eldest son of Hyoa Ikeda II and studied bamboo art under his father. In 1959 he entered the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied maki-e lacquer under Gonroku Matsuda and Yusai Akachi. He learned maki-e (maki-e) from Kenichiro Nakamura and Yuji Hasegawa at Takashi Masuda’s lacquer workshop.

In 1986, he was approached by ceramics researcher Haruzo Hayashiya to exhibit his bamboo tea ceremony utensils at the "500 Years of Tea Ceremony" exhibition, which attracted much attention. His bamboo teaware and tea utensils were highly acclaimed by tea ceremony connoisseurs with an aesthetic eye. In 2005, he exhibited a series of work in which he used a machete to split or break lacquered bamboo. In 2018, Ikeda presented new sculptural work in bamboo and lacquer under the theme of "Divergence of Consciousness".

This exhibition will present Iwao Ikeda's ongoing modernity head-on for the first time in Japan through approximately 50 works.
