Japanese Sword Story Ⅱ

Shusui Museum of Art
Finished
In the era of the samurai, renowned swords were not something that could be obtained simply by desire; the owner was required to possess a “status” befitting the sword. Thus, swords came to represent the person themselves and became the “soul of the samurai.”

This exhibition, in its first phase titled “The Soul of the Samurai,” will showcase famed swords associated with historical samurai, along with armor and fittings that symbolize the aesthetic sense of the samurai.

Chapter 1, “The Beloved Swords of Warlords,” will introduce the stories of warlords and their swords, such as the Ichimonji sword attributed to Uesugi Kenshin, the Sanjo Munechika sword dedicated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the “Akechi Chikakage” beloved by Akechi Mitsuhide, and the Gō Yoshihiro sword that Date Masamune is said to have received from Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Chapter 2, “The Three Great Swords and the Treasured Swords of Daimyo,” will feature the three great swords highly prized in the world—Masamune, Yoshimitsu, and Gō Yoshihiro—along with treasured swords cherished by daimyo families.

In the second phase, titled “The Secrets of the Beauty of Renowned Swords,” we will delve into the beauty of renowned swords through the three elements that are key to appreciating Japanese swords: “hamon” (temper patterns), “jigane” (steel surface), and “sugata” (shape). Observe the “hamon,” which is essential for maintaining sharpness; the “jigane,” which reveals the unique characteristics of different swordsmith schools and the deep allure of steel; and the “sugata,” which encompasses the beauty of the sword’s curvature and tip.
