Jason Lee
Jason Lee is an American skateboarder, actor, and photographer. As one of the most influential figures in the skateboarding scene of the 1990s, Lee significantly shaped the culture, not only through his iconic style but also by co-founding the independent skate brand STEREO. Parallel to his career in film and television—where he is widely recognized for his performances in Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky—Lee has steadily established himself as a photographic artist of considerable depth and vision.

This exhibition at studio35minutes marks the first solo presentation of Jason Lee’s photographic work in Japan. It brings into focus his contemplative approach to the American landscape, presenting original prints selected from two of his major publications, TX | CA 17 and TX | CA 19, both of which are published by renowned London-based imprint STANLEY/BARKER.
The exhibition will be presented in two parts: the first showcasing works from TX | CA 17, and the second featuring those from TX | CA 19.
The TX | CA series comprises images taken during road trips from Lee's former home in Texas to Los Angeles, California, another city he once called home. The title abbreviations “TX” and “CA” refer to these respective states. TX | CA 17, captured in 2017 on black and white film, is paired with TX | CA 19, a color documentation of the same journey made in 2019. Through these parallel explorations, Lee creates a quiet dialogue between two separate moments that share a common path.

Lee draws inspiration from “New Topographics,” a photographic movement that emerged in the United States during the 1970s and which redefined the genre of landscape photography. Rather than seeking to capture the sublime or picturesque, Lee’s work embraces a measured neutrality, capturing understated, overlooked, and quietly enduring facets of the American environment. In his images, traces of bygone eras and neglected spaces linger with quiet dignity.

The prints presented in this exhibition were individually produced by the artist himself under the title “studio35minutes Japan Print.” They express the arid climate and subtle textures of the American Southwest through carefully balanced tones and a restrained color palette. In keeping with Lee’s vision, the works are offered at accessible prices to encourage a broader appreciation of his photographic practice.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter Jason Lee’s photographic work in Japan and to reflect on a personal, unvarnished vision of the American landscape, as seen through the eyes of a traveler with a deep reverence for place and memory.
