Artists

Rei Kamoi, Shunsuke Matsumoto, Saburo Aso, Toshiyuki Hasekawa, Makoto Saburi, Chutsu Imanishi et al.
This exhibition showcases modern and contemporary Western-style paintings collected by Yoshio Tani, a resident of Hakusan, Ishikawa.

The works of Rei Kamoi (1928-1985), in particular, are a clear example of the characteristics of the collection. Rei Kamoi studied at Kanazawa College of Art under Saburo Miyamoto (1905-1974). After traveling to Paris, Brazil, and other places, he stayed in Spain, where he painted subjects such as drunkards, clowns, and old women. He also continued to question the darkness of society and humanity, leaving behind self-portraits expressing his weakness and ugliness. Other painters who also showed their unaffected eye to the times include Shunsuke Matsumoto (1912-1948) and Saburo Aso (1913-2000), who formed the "Newcomers' Art Association" during the war, as well as Toshiyuki Hasekawa (1891-1940), Makoto Saburi (1898-1936), Chutsu Imanishi (1898-1936), and Kikugoro Kikuchi (1897-1948). The exhibition will feature 90 paintings by 55 painters, all of whom passed at relatively young ages.

The Tani Collection has been exhibited at museums and art galleries in Ishikawa Prefecture, but this is the first exhibition of its kind in western Japan.
