Tatsuo Takayama
Tatsuo Takayama is a Japanese painter highly regarded both domestically and internationally for his works created using traditional Japanese painting techniques. Having reached the pinnacle of the Japanese painting world, Takayama consistently questioned what it meant to be human and earnestly faced and depicted the things in front of him. The foundation has a deep connection with Takayama, showcasing his works at the Kadokawa headquarters entrance and publishing collections of his paintings and writings. Consequently, the foundation houses numerous valuable works by Takayama.
In this exhibition, key works by Takayama, including the early piece "Nude" (1948), marking a turning point in his artistic career, and "Maiden in Blue" (1984), considered a culmination of feminine beauty, will be on display. The focal point of the exhibition is the series of 156 cover illustrations for "Bungei Shunju" created monthly from 1987 to 1999. These small universes, each measuring 15 cm x 15 cm, depict the changing seasons and offer a glimpse into the perpetual cycles of nature and humanity.
By immersing oneself in the landscapes that Takayama observed, the exhibition serves as an opportunity to reexamine the world that is intricately connected to nature and the universe.
