Kaga Maki-e and Kyo Maki-e

Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum
Finished
Maki-e is a technique of decorating with patterns drawn in lacquer and then sprinkling gold or silver powder on top. Its delicate and elegant aesthetic has been favored for decorating temples, furnishings, and accessories, evolving to reflect the artistic sensibilities of different eras.

Although it faced a decline due to the social changes brought about by the Meiji Restoration, maki-e regained vitality through export-oriented products, leading to the creation of even more diverse works. Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum holds a large collection of exquisite and elaborate maki-e works from the late Edo to the Meiji periods when the art form reached its peak. Among these, Kaga maki-e, which shares the same origins as Kyoto maki-e but developed independently, radiates an air of refined brilliance.

This exhibition showcases works by master artisans who carried on the tradition of Kyoto and Kaga maki-e and engaged in creating captivating maki-e pieces. Enjoy the works of notable craftsmen such as Sotakusai Sawada, known for the intricate style of Kaga maki-e; Koshichi Tomita, representing the mainstream of Kyoto maki-e; and Zohiko, a lacquerware merchant who devoted efforts to improving the quality of maki-e. These artisans have faithfully inherited traditional techniques while continuously exploring designs that align with the times.
